“Discover the passion, elegance and beauty behind Ferrari at Viva Ferrari. With 3D animations, performance arts and optical illusions, watch as multimedia and agility become one.” – Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi.
I was asked to write a top line melody, some operatic vocals and Italian lyrics for a bespoke musical score for a new show entitled ‘Viva Ferrari’, which was to be performed at Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi, UAE. The brief I was given was to write for the opening and closing sequences of the show, and to do this I had to immerse myself and get into character – an enchanting Italian siren! The live show incorporates 3D animations, live theatre, dance and optical illusions. The music had to bring all of these elements together taking the audience on an emotive journey.
The Viva Ferrari show is primarily a love story. The production begins with the lead male driving a Ferrari past Lake Como in Italy, he is being lured towards a villa by a siren’s voice. (Yes that is my voice!) As he arrives at the villa, the gates open and in a computer graphic sequence he is drawn toward the ethereal voice…a glass chandelier drops and the particles transform into a beautiful woman, just as the characters meet, the environment around them changes and they are separated. The dancers pass through a series of spaces looking for each other as the entire landscape is revealed to be a 3D image of the Ferrari logo.
Composer & Sound Designer Stephen Wakeling, of Qritikal Media wrote the bespoke music, and I wrote and developed the operatic score and lyrics. I worked from my studio and wrote different melodies and several variations on them until the desired feel was achieved. Once the melody had been finalised I went on to write the lyrics, which had to incorporate an emotive and ethereal quality to enhance the love that the female character has for the male character. I ended up writing in Italian “L’amore, nel mio core, l’amore,” which literally translates: ‘the love in my heart is all for you; my love.” Although short and simple I think it works well with all of the other elements and is strong enough without being too overpowering. I recorded 3rd & 5th harmonies, which were to be layered into the final piece.
The Show is currently running in Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, but if you can’t get to Abu Dhabi any time soon check out the teaser trailer here:
